Peace River From Grande Prairie you may choose to venture north 197 km (118 mi) along Hwy 2 to Peace River. European settlement in Peace Country dates back to 1770 when the first Hudson’s Bay Company fur traders entered the region through the Peace River system. Full settlement began in 1906 - 1916 when rail lines reached north. Hundreds of years of Native settlement predating the fur trade are told in museums throughout the area. The town is at the confluence of the Peace, Smoky and Heart rivers, best viewed from Sagitawa Lookout, Judah Hill or the monument to Twelve Foot Davis on Grouard Hill. Twelve Foot Davis was a prospector who in 1862 staked a 12-ft claim between two much larger claims and came away with $15,000 worth of gold. Address: . Peace River AB Canada
